THE HOUSE OF TORNMENT OF EXILES AND POLITICAL PRISONERS
Tauragės tremtinių ir politinių kalinių kančių namai
EXILES AND PARTISANS
The exposition tells about the life of partisans and the suffering of the resistance groups at the NKVD headquarters. The exposition contains many photos about guerrilla warfare and exile, and records people's memories.
MODERN, INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION
The museum is equipped with a new, modern exposition with a prison cell, an interrogator's office, and a partisan bunker. In the prison cell, the visitor will be able to hear and experience what the people imprisoned here felt and experienced. Find out the conditions under which the prisoners were held. In the interrogator's office, everyone will be able to empathize face to face with the interrogator. In the partisan bunker you can get acquainted with the life and living conditions of the partisans.
LEGACY OF EXILES
Here you will also find items from former deportees and political prisoners brought from exile. There are plenty of photos, handicrafts and letters that helped the deportees survive the difficult years.
From carpentry housing to suffering homes
In 1936 German Schubert built a house where he lived until 1940. During the years of German occupation, a high-ranking German officer lived in this house. 1944-1954 the house was turned into an NKVD interrogation prison. Prison cells were installed in the basement, and brutal interrogations took place on the upper floors.
The museum is located in an authentic, former place of torture. At the end of 2016, the installation of a new, modern exposition of the museum was completed.
Interactive interogation room
An authentic, original NKVD educational film about the search for partisan hideouts and bunkers can also be seen in the interrogator’s office.
Corner of the past
In addition to the prison cell and the interrogation room, there is also a guerrilla bunker in the basement of the museum. In this bunker you will get acquainted with the peculiarities of partisan hideouts and the main purposes of partisans. It’s hard to believe that partisans sometimes stayed in such hideouts for weeks.
